Healthy Eating
Pupils should have the confidence, skills and understanding to make healthy food choices. Healthy and nutritious food and drink should be available across the school day.
In a Healthy School:
- A named member of the Senior Management Team is responsible for Healthy Eating
- Staff involved with practical food teaching are suitably trained
- There is a whole school food policy drawn up through wide consultation
- The school responds to feedback from parents and pupils on food policy and practice
- There is a welcoming eating environment which encourages positive social interaction
- Food is healthier as outlined in the Food in Schools Toolkit
- Food choices are monitored and acted upon
- Pupils learn about different types of food and how to avoid high levels of salt and fat, and increase fruit and vegetable consumption
- Pupils learn to plan and budget for, and prepare balanced meals
- There is easy access to free, clean and palatable water
- School meals provider follows the latest guidance, and publish weekly menus
- Pupils are consulted about all food available in schools
