Easy-To-Grow Vegetable Guide

Working boots.

Having created your vegetable garden, the next step is to decide what to plant...

For the beginner, the huge range of vegetable seeds and plants on offer can be daunting, especially when they all have different planting and harvesting times, and need to be fitted into your crop rotation.

The following section shows you how and when to plant a selection of ten easy-to-grow vegetables.
They have been chosen because they:

  • can be planted, cared for and harvested outside school holidays
  • are easy to grow
  • are generally pest and disease free
  • can be grown in a simple three-bed rotation

All except for potatoes and onions can be bought as packets of seeds from your local garden centre. 'Seed' potatoes and onion 'sets' are just miniature versions of the full size vegetable, and these can be bought fresh in season from the garden centre. Alternatively you can order online from www.organiccatalogue.com or small quantities in plain packets can be obtained very cheaply from www.alanromans.com.

The ten vegetables are listed below, with information on rotation category, time of sowing, planting out and harvesting. This is followed by a suggested planting plan and a month-by-month guide to growing them in the school garden.

Try this plan for your first year, then you can experiment with other vegetables in later years, and build on your growing success and knowledge.
