Year of Food and Farming

Schools and Farmers Academic year 2007-8 has been designated The Year of Food and Farming, (YOFF), but in Herefordshire we intend this to be more than a one off event for the year. We want it to be the frame for many changes for the better in terms of the food we eat.

The purpose of YOFF is to help children and young people learn about how food is grown and produced, why we should eat fresh local produce, and how to use fresh local ingredients to create healthy nutritious meals... In short, the vision is to feed young minds with a respect and passion for good, healthy food and where it comes from. This promotion of healthier living will have a direct impact on healthier learning and healthier communities.

Year of Food and Farming During the YOFF each Herefordshire school has been offered a local farmer ‘for adoption’. This will be the start of a long term relationship between schools and the farming community and allow children to reconnect with where their food comes from.

During this year all KS 1 and 2 children have a YOFF Passport which they are having signed off by farmers, farm shops, and farmers markets, and their parents and teachers when they have either grown or cooked something.
