Diversity

Happy Children.Promoting and celebrating diversity helps all pupils to feel valued members of the community. It encourages self respect and respect amongst peers.

Herefordshire schools are now becoming more ethnically diverse and therefore the Herefordshire Healthy Schools team have identified six criteria which schools can evidence against:

In a Healthy School:

  • Teaching methods and styles take account of the needs of pupils from different ethnic groups and encourage positive attitudes
  • Resources are available to meet the needs of pupils from ethnic minority groups as necessary
  • All staff receive training in how to deal with racist incidents/prejudice and promote equality
  • Pro-active steps are taken to involve ethnic minority parents in school life and are encouraged to be school governors
  • The school's discipline policy is applied fairly and equally to all pupils regardless of ethnicity
  • The race equality policy has been accepted and endorsed by all members of the school community and includes clear procedures to deal with incidents promptly and firmly
Racist Incident Reporting
The Stephen Lawrence Inquiry chose to adopt the following definition and this is endorsed by Herefordshire Council - "A racist incident is any incident which is perceived to be racist by the victim or any other person."

Schools have a statutory obligation to report racist incidents to the Children and Young People's Directorate on a termly basis. Incident investigation and reporting forms can be downloaded via the links below. Nil returns are also required if no incidents have occurred and can be made by following the respective link, also below.

Sending in a report shows that a school is taking active steps to tackle racist behaviour and not that they are experiencing abnormal levels of racism. Individual information sent into the directorate is seen only by the person recording it and not passed on to any third party, however, statistical information may be collated and used to identify trends and patterns and advise local planning. Only the ethnicity of the victim, the type of incident, and the total number of incidents will be used for statistics. The school will be offered further support if required by the Education Race Equality Officer.

Ден на Източна Европа
Eastern European Day
Kingstone Language College

Eastern European Day

Kingstone Language College made Eastern Europe the focus for one of their frequent varied curriculum days. It was a great opportunity to broaden the student’s knowledge of a part of the world which has recently become more prominent in Herefordshire, as well as to increase their awareness of the variety of Eastern European cultures, traditions and languages.

The rich palette of planned activities captivated the students. The debates amongst the Year 9 students on stereotypes and racial equality were lively and open and the viewing of ‘Migrant Stories’ gave the audience a glimpse into the lives of some of the migrant workers living in a rural county. In all the day was a huge success and bought together students, staff and members of the local community.
